1. Why substantial Packaging
Luxury brands, their packages are, particularly, heavy, which can really increase the shipping cost. So what many brands do this year, is to try to take weight out of their packaging to better manage freight and transportation costs. Also, a lot of emerging brands come to the market through the e-commerce platform due to Covid-19 and internet development. So more and more brands look at the sustainable options that we’ve been able to offer. However, for many brands, what they want is not just to reduce the freight cost, but to be more good stewards of the planet.
2. What you should concern about the sustainable packaging when you source them
- The more expense for sustainable package
In all honesty, as a manufacturer of packages, sustainable films are more expensive. That’s the cost you should concern about. But if you want to do it in a way that does not end up polluting the environment, that’s a nice thing to do. So again, the work in sustainable film is just continuing to evolve. And you’ll pay more for that. Also, you may consider whether your customers have enough awareness of the eco-friendly environment already and are prepared to bear these additional costs.
- The supply issue about the sustainable package nowadays
Yes, COVID-19 influences everything. The supply chain seems to have slowed down because there is a supply issue out in the marketplace right now with a lot of materials. And as a result, a lot of the development work that some of these companies are doing is taking much longer. And we think that’s something that we’re all going to continue to face in the months.
- The source comes from
For a sustainable package, it’s a lot about the source and not the supplier. You have to ask questions like: where did the paper come from? Where did the material come from? Are you shipping it all the way across the world and then shipping it back and then shipping it to a third-place?
3. How we understand sustainable packaging, not just materials, but the way of shipment
Sustainability is a big picture issue. In our opinion, it’s not just using a high level of post-consumer recycled material in your body bag. It’s about buying locally if you can. If you can find a source locally that can make packaging that is up to your level, that’d be great. And if you can’t, then work with a great company that can source that product for you then consolidate the freight into one truck. There are things that can be done that are more sustainable. Lowering your carbon footprint by lesser diesel emissions for the truck or fewer shipments, things like that.
What we’re trying to do now for the sustainable package is to design the structure more sustainable. For example, we develop a box for a customer and it folds flat. It ships flat from production. So when it comes out, it’s totally flat. When you receive it, you pop it open, and all of a sudden you’ve got a beautiful box. And imagine how much freight that saved from import because it was an imported item. A lot of packaging manufacturers don’t have the capability to do magnets and hand assembly. And this box has magnets in it and hand assembly. So there are wonderful options now with packaging that make you can ship it flat to save space. Yes, that’s a way for us to understand the sustainable package.
So when we source the sustainable packages, you’d better know what you gonna bear and understand why you choose that. Especially in pandemic times, the supply chain is another big issue you’ll be aware of.
