Several common plastic materials and their applications

High Density Polyethylene (HDPE)

HDPE is the most widely used type of plastic. It has good barrier properties and stiffness, making it ideal for packaging short shelf-life products such as milk. And has good chemical resistance, so it is used to package many household and industrial chemicals, such as detergents and bleaches. And pigmented HDPE bottles have better stress crack resistance than uncoloured HDPE.

Application:

  • Bottles for milk, water, juice, cosmetics, shampoo, tableware and laundry detergent, and household cleaners
  • Grocery and Retail Shopping Bags
  • Cereal box lining

Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE)

LDPE has high toughness, flexibility and relative clarity and is primarily used in film applications, popular in applications requiring heat sealing, and has excellent resistance to acids, alkalies and vegetable oils.

Application:

  • Dry cleaning bags, newspapers, bread, frozen meals, fresh produce and household waste
  • Shrink wrap and stretch film
  • Coating of milk cartons and hot and cold beverage cups
  • container lid
  • Squeezable bottles (like honey and mustard)

Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET, PETE)

PET is clear, tough, and has good gas and moisture barrier properties. This resin is commonly used in beverage bottles and many injection molded consumer product containers.

Application:

  • Plastic bottles for soft drinks, water, juices, sports drinks, beer, mouthwash, ketchup and salad dressing
  • Food jars for peanut butter, jelly, jam and pickles
  • Heatable film and microwaveable food trays

Polypropylene (PP)

PP has good chemical resistance, high strength and high melting point, suitable for hot filling liquids.

Application:

  • Containers for yogurt, margarine, takeout and deli
  • medicine bottle
  • Caps and Caps
  • Ketchup and Syrup Bottles

Polystyrene

PS is a multifunctional plastic that can be rigid or foamed. General purpose polystyrene is clear, hard and brittle. It has a relatively low melting point and is often combined with rubber to make high-impact polystyrene (HIPS) for packaging and durable applications that require toughness but opacity.

Application:

  • Food service items, like cup or bowl
